  Job Families

That’s not in my job description…

Does that sound familiar? The vast majority of jobs are defined by the list of tasks and responsibilities contained in a traditional job description. But is this the best way of describing work? Using job family structures it becomes possible to describe occupational roles in a clear and unambiguous way based upon the skills and attributes required to perform competently in the required role. This in turn allows organisations to link similar posts into generic role profiles, doing away with the old-fashioned, prescriptive lists of tasks.

In a small to medium-sized local authority it would not be unusual for 1000+ job descriptions to be replaced by 80-100 role profiles.

Some of the advantages of using a job family approach:

  • it simplifies the pay and grading structure resulting in a logical set of role profiles easily understood by all staff
  • clear role profiles help managers plan for service delivery and employees plan their careers
  • performance-related pay can be clearly linked to competencies identified in the role profiles
